Painting is my passion! I love the feeling of the brush as it touches the warp and weft of the canvas, the myriad of effects created through pressure and stroke. Although I come to the canvas with a sketchbook filled with ideas and reference photos, the image often develops a life of its own. There is a visual dialogue that occurs between myself and the canvas, a give and take. I try to apply each stroke with intent. Painting is not always easy. Other times, it can be exhilarating and freeing. To me, the subject is not as important as the interplay of light and shadow, the arrangement of elements and color. Sometimes I think painting is like a chemistry experiment. Each color laid down reacts to the color next to it. I love the interplay of saturated color with other colors that are more muted.
I am humbled by nature's beauty. Forever curious, I study the sky, the clouds, the trees and shrubs, watching how they change with the capricious effect of the sun and the seasons. I try to incorporate what I see into what I paint. The more I paint, the less it is about recreating reality, but more about interpreting reality. When a viewer sees my work, I hope to take them down a path that's familiar yet somewhat mysterious and intriguing.
Biography
Originally from Canada, Janice Wright currently resides in Denver, Colorado. An Alberta College of Art graduate, Wright worked as a graphic designer for over fifteen years. In 2001, she moved to Europe. While there, she travelled extensively, visiting many galleries in Paris, Amsterdam and The Hague. Wright was profoundly moved by the work of the old masters that she saw. Returning to Canada in 2002, Wright was inspired to paint her home with fresh eyes. Influenced by the impressionist style of Van Gogh, the Canadian Group of Seven and Mary Cassatt, Wright works in acrylic. An avid hiker and photographer, she draws upon the landscape around her for subject matter and inspiration.
